The Beautiful Game

It’s an exciting time for women’s football. The success of the Lionesses in the World Cup and in two consecutive European Championships has been pivotal, marking a turning point not just for the game, but for equality more broadly. This visibility has challenged long-standing stereotypes about women in sport and inspired a new generation of girls to see football as a space where they belong. Across the UK, more young women and girls are taking to the pitch, encouraged by positive role models who show that skill, ambition and leadership have no limits. Participation has been helped, in part, by funding schemes introduced into schools by the Football Association to make girls’ football both accessible and widely available. These images are from a new and growing photographic project exploring how football is capturing the interest of young girls in the UK.
